Keep NI Beautiful
On Wednesday 9th November we took a walk down to Long Tower where we worked with Garteh, Peter and Ryan from Keep NI Beautiful. We looked at their green spaces and the trees that had been planted in them. We had planted the same types of trees (pear, apple and plum) in our school, so we were there to learn how to look after them.
Gareth told us that we had to cut back the diseased, dead or damaged parts of the tree in order to help them grow better in the springtime. We also learned about the important role that compost worms and dead leaves can play in order to help the young trees.
We gathered the dead leaves and put them round the base of the trees, this will allow any nutrients that were in them to be put back into the soil.
After we washed our hands we went and made some fruit compotes with hall the different fruits that will eventually grow in our school grounds after we planted them.
It was a great day out and we loved working with Long Tower and St John's!
